Cool Spring Village offers old and new collectibles

Local artists, antique items showcased
June 1, 2018

The old and new come together at Cool Spring Village, a freshly named antique, craft and specialty gift store complex on Route 9 outside Lewes.

Cool Spring Village, comprising Old & Gnu Antiques, The Barn & Annex, Sassy Chic and now, Sassy Stitches, will celebrate its official rebranding Saturday-Sunday, June 2-3, with refreshments for all shoppers.

Mary and Peter Beaman have operated Old & Gnu Antiques for 37 years. The store opened in 1981 on Coastal Highway in Lewes and moved to its current location in 2002. Outbuildings surrounding the store allowed the Beamans to expand their inventory into The Barn & Annex.

The shops overflow with estate jewelry, coins, silver, collectibles, vintage toys, crocks, bottles, antique furniture and salvaged wood, doors and windows. From antique prints to can labels to marbles, shoppers can find virtually every kind of collectible imaginable. “People come in here and ask, ‘You don’t have this, or that, do you?’ and we usually do,” Peter laughs.

His wife Mary, a recently retired physical therapist, now has more time to spend in the shops. Her favorite collections are American Indian pottery and blue willow china.

The store’s name arose from Peter’s love of animals. A former animal caretaker at Washington D.C.’s National Zoo, Peter collects taxidermy animals, including the store’s namesake gnus.

In early 2017, the Beamans cleared out part of the property’s farmhouse for another husband-and-wife team, Lynn and Keith Misener, to open Sassy Chic, offering handcrafted works from 26 local artists and antiques and collectibles. In less than a year, the shop expanded throughout the entire farmhouse, with vendors selling decorated windows, photography, nautical decor and woodworks, and crocheted items.

Sassy Chic began as a hobby for Lynn. “For Christmas Eve one year I wanted to make something special for the table,” Lynn said. “I had 20 extra wineglasses and decided to paint them. From there, I moved onto painting windows.”

Lynn and Keith, a photographer, would sell their works at area craft shows, but the burden of hauling items to and from locations every weekend became too taxing, so they were excited to open the shop, which has just expanded again to offer custom monogramming and vinyl decal and decorating services.

Cool Spring Village is located at 28947 Lewes-Georgetown Highway in Lewes.
