Fresh market: Rehoboth Beach offers fun for all

‘Market for everyone’ open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays
July 16, 2017

Real food, real farmers, real community. That's the motto of the Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market.

Pat Coluzzi founded the market for one simple, slightly amusing, reason.

"Honestly, I didn't want to drive out onto the highway to get to the grocery store," she said. "It was the middle of summer, and I didn't want to deal with the traffic."

At the market's inception Coluzzi was a Rehoboth Beach city commissioner. She knew a law that stated there could be one farmers market in town.

"My idea was met with a lot of support," Coluzzi, now market master. "The locals love our weekly markets because it's one of the few community things that we have in Rehoboth Beach that people love to come to, meet their neighbors, and just hang out."

Even those who receive SNAP benefits, Food Stamps or WIC are able to use that form of currency at the farmers market.

"This is a market for everyone," she said. "A lot of vendors accept credit cards, cash, and if guests have any kind of government assistance, we have a machine to process their cards and give them tokens to use at the market."

The Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market is one of the biggest, most diverse markets in the Cape Region with roughly enough space to feature 38 vendors, entertainment, prepared food, and even a storytime that the Rehoboth Beach Library hosts for all the little kids.

"We have guest vendors and a very committed group of vendors," said Coluzzi. "I don't have enough space for everyone every week, so I rotate guest vendors in there to provide something different to the market. It's very meaningful to our community to have a variety of different vendors."

"Our market is located in such a beautiful area with enough space to host more vendors than other markets comfortably."

The Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market is located in Grove Park next to the Chamber of Commerce in Rehoboth Beach. Parking is free.

"We got the city to agree that if you don't have a sticker or parking pass for the city, they will not ticket you within a two-block radius, only on market days, during market hours." Streets where the parking code applies are Henlopen Avenue, Columbia Avenue, Sussex Street and Felton Street.

The Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market is open Tuesdays in June, July and August from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine.

Tents are all provided to each and every vendor weekly with the help of volunteers.

"We're always looking for volunteers," said Coluzzi. "We honestly couldn't do the market without them. We let vendors use our tents and have volunteers who help set up and take down. We have people who work the information tent and give information. It's very community and volunteer driven."

Those interested in volunteering should contact Coluzzi at pat@rbfarmersmarket.com.

"People say that this market is one of the friendliest markets they've been to and that it's the highlight of their week," said Coluzzi. "I hear this all the time. I even hear people from out of state saying the same thing. And you know what, this is our eleventh year and it continues to go strong. We must be doing something right."
