Causing a stir on the beach in Rehoboth in 1952

October 10, 2018

Don Hill, a regular reader of the Cape Gazette, sent along this photograph and information recently:

“Jeannette Marderwald is pictured on Rehoboth Beach in 1952, flanked by a son and her mother. She emigrated from France to the United States with two sons in 1950, having spent World War II as a teenager in occupied Paris. Her mother preceded her here. Jeannette’s bikini - modest by today’s standards, of course - was the first to grace Rehoboth Beach, and it created quite a stir, being reported widely at the time, even in The Washington Post. Imagine how many 2018 bikinis could be cut from the fabric in this one! Mrs. Marderwald passed away at age 92 at Beebe Healthcare on Aug. 24. She was an active and enthusiastic member of all three local American Contract Bridge League duplicate bridge clubs.”
