Summer flowers are abundant at Historic Lewes Farmers Market

July 11, 2018

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, July 14, at George H.P. Smith Park, Johnson and Dupont avenues, Lewes.

Zucchini, hot peppers, red okra, yellow and white peaches, blueberries, just-picked corn, heirloom tomatoes, slicer tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, flower bouquets, ice cream, lamb, beef, eggs, yogurt, artisanal cheeses, and much more can be found at the market this Saturday.

At 9 a.m., Jennifer Noonan, Lewes Public Library children's librarian, will read Caldecott Honor Book "Tops & Bottoms" by Janet Stevens.

At 10 a.m., Hattie Allen from Hattie's Garden and Marie Mayor from Lavender Fields will discuss growing flowers for market and demonstrate the art of summer bouquets in a Meet the Farmer demonstration. Summer flowers are at their peak, and these two farmers know their way around creating a beautiful bouquet. They'll offer lots of tips on how to cut, arrange and preserve flowers.

The HLFM Wednesday Outdoor Market at Crooked Hammock Brewery is also open from 8 to 11 a.m. every Wednesday with an expanded number of vendors at Crooked Hammock Way and Kings Highway in Lewes.

The market continues its SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to come to the SNAP tent at the market to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the market. WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons are also accepted at both the Saturday and Wednesday markets.

Ample parking can be found at the Shields Elementary School and Lewes School parking lots (intersection of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive), a short walk to the market. A veggie valet service is available to help customers carry heavy items back to their cars. This service is located right outside the HLFM Information Tent.

The market is open rain or shine, but, if it is raining, the market moves to Shields Elementary School parking lot (Savannah Road and Sussex Drive).
